Japan meets Germany – cultural exchange in practice at Driland Kolleg π
On December 30 at 12 noon, the non-profit event “Japan meets Germany” took place at Driland Kolleg. Despite the school vacations, around 40 interested visitors came together to get to know Japanese culture and talk to each other.
The focus was on personal exchange: six Japanese students – Otoya Takata, Sora Hiroyoshi, Shunichi, Hiroki Wada, Honoka Fujishiro and Yuya – were guests together with their teacher Tomoko Maejima from Kobe. They prepared traditional Japanese dishes with great dedication and served them to the German students on site.
The menu included yaki soba, curry rice, zenzai, sushi and soy popcorn – a culinary introduction to everyday Japanese culture.
The event was organized by the German-Japanese Friendship Association, which deliberately wanted to create a space for encounters and dialogue with this format.
The feedback from the participants was consistently positive: the open atmosphere, cooking and eating together and the personal discussions made cultural differences tangible and helped to build bridges between cultures.
Such encounters impressively demonstrate how cultural understanding can grow through direct exchange – an important contribution to international understanding. π
