The consequences of climate change require adjustments to nature conservation efforts in order to make protected areas more resilient and to safeguard biodiversity. Changes in precipitation and weather anomalies, in particular, have a noticeable impact on flora and fauna. A key goal is to retain more water in the landscape, particularly by re-wetting drained peatlands, which also reduces CO2 emissions.
The LIFE CrossBorderBog project aims to achieve permanent rewetting in the Hündfelder Moor raised bog and the adjacent Aamsveen in the Netherlands. Extensive measures are planned for the next five years. Christoph Rückriem and Meike Timmer from the Zwillbrock Biological Station will give a presentation on the project’s goals, challenges, and progress.
