Secrets, Wine, and a Life Well-Lived—A Literary Evening at the Kaufhaus der Chance

On June 11 at 6:30 p.m., Kaufhaus der Chance will host a unique living room reading at its furniture store located at Amelandsbrückenweg 93 in Epe: Gronau-based author Christiane Nitsche-Costa will present published and unpublished stories, reports, and other texts. In addition to her short crime story “Endlich vegan” (Finally Vegan)—nominated for the Glauser Prize in 2025—and other crime stories, she will also read excerpts from her novel “Die Geheimniskrämerin” (The Secret-Keeper), which is currently represented by the Meller literary agency.

Over a glass of wine in a cozy atmosphere, guests gain fascinating insights into life in the fictional village of Frauenend, where there is also a department store like this one. Naturally, this is a place that holds a special appeal for the secretive Katherin Grimme.

“So many stories, so much lived life” can be found there, she thinks. And because every story holds a secret—and every secret holds a story—there’s plenty to discover in Frauenend.

Anyone who wants to see for themselves whether this also applies to the “Kaufhaus der Chance” can get a sense of it during this unique literary evening, since the furniture and all the decorations in the store come from household clear-outs and donations from residents of Gronau, Epe, and the surrounding area. Since new items are constantly coming in while others are sold, the selection and atmosphere are always changing. That’s why there’s sure to be both the familiar and the unfamiliar for many to discover this evening—in Christiane Nitsche-Costa’s stories as well as in the exhibition.
