50 Years of Punk: A Movement Between “No Future” and the Present

50 Years of Punk—and the question still remains: What remains of a movement that rebelled against convention, stagnation, and narrow-mindedness with the slogan “No Future”?

The theatrical-musical performance “Punk 76|26” uses this anniversary as an opportunity to take a journey through five decades of punk and cultural history. Drama, music, and performance come together, taking the audience from the movement’s beginnings in 1976 to the present day. The production explores protest, freedom, and resistance—and the question of how relevant the spirit of punk still is today.

Of course, music also plays a central role: The Clash, Patti Smith, the Sex Pistols, and other influential artists provide the soundtrack for the evening.

The performance will be complemented by a reading from “Krawall & Kopfhörer.” The book tells the personal story of Ralf P., who founded the city’s first punk band in Wuppertal in 1978. His memories take readers right into the heart of the early punk era—to concerts, records, friendships, nights of heavy drinking, and the feeling of being part of an alternative world.

The reading will be accompanied by songs from that era, bringing the sound of an entire generation back to life.

The performance and reading thus offer two perspectives on the same story: “Punk 76|26” asks what has become of punk—while “Krawall & Kopfhörer” reminds us of how it all began.

An evening about music, rebellion, friendship, and freedom—and about a movement that, even after 50 years, is still far from fading away.
