Literature Club on Monday – 150th anniversary of Thomas Mann’s death – A jubilee year for world literature
Thomas Mann would have been 150 years old on June 6, 2025.
The winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1929), writer and cosmopolitan lived a truly multifaceted life, from his beginnings as a political conservative to his clear position as a convinced democrat. Initially carried away by the prevailing enthusiasm for the war in the summer of 1914, later shaken by the collapse of the German Empire, he finally made a profound political about-turn.
After the assassination of the German Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau, he revised his previous stance and became a convinced democrat, which he remained until the end of his life.
His speech “My Time”, which he gave in Chicago in 1950, was an important and impressive testimony, as it manifested his aversion to all forms of totalitarianism.
Since then, Thomas Mann has decisively rejected any dogmatic dictatorship.
To mark the 150th anniversary of his birth, the life of one of the most influential German writers of the 20th century will be examined in more detail.
